7.11 Finding and Merging Duplicate Contacts

Download article

Open Contacts → Duplicates to look for records that may describe the same person. A scan changes nothing by itself.

What the scanner compares

Likely matches share strong evidence such as a personal email address or phone number, or combine the same name with an organization or city. Same-name matches are shown only when you choose the broader option because unrelated people often share a name. Very large shared-value groups are skipped to avoid noisy results.

Review before merging

  1. Open a suggested group and choose the contact to keep.
  2. Review differing names, organization details, birthdays, notes, addresses, and other supported fields.
  3. Choose which single-value details to retain. Multi-value details such as email addresses and phone numbers are combined within the app limits.
  4. Confirm the merge only after the preview looks right.

The selected contact remains active. The other original vCards move to Trash for 30 days, so details not represented in the merged editor remain recoverable there. Home, Work, Mobile, and preferred markers are retained for supported email, phone, and website values.

If a suggestion is wrong

Leave it alone. A suggestion is evidence to review, not a command. You can also restore an original contact from Trash after a merge, provided an exact active copy does not already exist.
